~ Mélange of merriment at Maria’s~

The school wore a festive look as all geared up for the annual carnival that included a flurry of activities like sports, Vibrations – the cultural fest and pre-Christmas celebrations complete with Christmas trees, wreaths, garlands, figurines, stockings, stars and ornaments hanging all around. The extravaganza began with the sporting activities with a fitting opening ceremony of flag hoisting, march-past and skill displays of Yoga, Aerobics, Taekwondo and Wushu performed by students. The school flag was hoisted by the Principal Mrs Alpana Khound Phukan while the march past was led by the house in-charge teachers of the four houses – Jatinga, Orang, Manas and Nameri. Following the ceremony and inauguration, students played various games like volleyball, basketball, football, tug of war, kabaddi and kho kho with a lot of enthusiasm and merriment. While sports continued in the field, the cultural fest was ready with exhibits of various states, countries and Christmas celebrations in the other side of the Birkuchi campus.

The morning assembly on December 21 began with the school prayer conducted by the Principal followed by a special prayer for Christmas led by Mrs Mercy Alex, the school counsellor. Mrs Nellie Ahmed Tanweer, the Founder and Managing Trustee of the school graced the occasion and spoke a few lines on the importance of prayer and honesty in one’s persona. She urged the students to be truthful to themselves and to tread on a path of truth. Thereafter a number of Christmas carols enthralled the audience of children and teachers. The Managing Trustee sat through the entire programme cheering and encouraging the singers. By the time it ended, the food stalls were ready with delectable and sumptuous platters of snacks, cakes and desserts. Everyone, from the Managing Trustee to the teachers and students enjoyed the gastronomic delights.

At 5 O’ Clock in the evening the stage was taken over by the ever zealous teachers and office staff of Maria’s for their final rounds of the volleyball, basketball and badminton matches. The teachers and staff had been playing the initial rounds onto the semi-final in the last few days and December 21 was the day of the grand finales including the tug of war and running race. The first event of the evening was the final volleyball match played between the teachers and office staff with the teachers emerging as the winners. Then the lady teachers pulled up their socks for the tug of war, race, basketball and badminton finals. It was a first-ever sporting event for the teachers and staff at Maria’s Public School and everyone joined in unreservedly. The excitement doubled up with the Managing Trustee and the Principal joining in the tug of war and races and the Vice Principal Mr Anjan Gogoi playing like an ace sports buff. The excitement was so infectious that 70 plus Nazma Ma’am, the fit like a fiddle housekeeping in-charge, too joined and completed a round of the running race. The prize distribution was equally thrilling with teachers cheering and greeting each other. As a unique gesture of respect and fond memory, the Champions Trophy of the Inter-Maria’s Teachers and Staff Sports Meet was named after Late Anjana Dasgupta, a former headmistress of the school who expired three years ago on December 21st. This initiation and declaration by the Managing Trustee proved once again why Maria’s becomes a home away from home as soon as one steps into its premises and why Maria’s breeds a unique culture of state-of-the-art education and instillation of core humane values.
