~ Community Feast held on Gandhi Jayanti ~

In accordance with Gandhi Jayanti, Maria’s Public School organised a programme, ‘Community Connection’ on October 3, 2015 in its Birkuchi campus to commemorate the philosophy of the Mahatma to be one with all, bereft of class, creed and religion. The students and teachers of Birkuchi Prathamik Vidyalaya were invited to take part in the event. It was also an extension of the school’s community service programme organised from time to time which is an initiative of the Founder and Managing Trustee of the school, Mrs Nellie Ahmed Tanweer.

The day’s programme started with a prayer song by the students of the Prathamik Vidyalaya followed by a brief cultural show by students of classes IV and V of both the schools. Mrs Nellie Ahmed Tanweer said on the occasion that this has been initiated by the school to encourage brotherhood and to develop a sense of responsibility in the new generation towards the community and also to sensitise the students of Maria’s to the hardship faced by the less privileged people and to offer assistance and cooperation as and when it is needed; and at the same time to extend a helping hand to the children who have not been fortunate enough to get access to the 21st century education despite having the same rights. She also said that this is just a beginning which will be carried forward by the school till posterity. The same feeling echoed in the speech of the Principal of Maria’s Public School, Mrs Alpana Khound Phukan who welcomed the guests to this exemplary initiative. The teachers of the Prathamik Vidyalaya appreciated the steps taken by Maria’s and said that they have observed change and motivation in the children of their school owing to Maria’s’ knowledge exchange programmes. The celebration ended with a community feast where the students of the two schools as well as the staff members and teaching fraternity enjoyed lunch as one community, one people.

The teachers-in-charge of the programme were Mrs Aparna Khanikar and Mrs Arnavi Chakraborty who also guide the community service wing of the school under the leadership of the Founder and the Principal. It is noteworthy that Maria’s is the first school in the city of Guwahati to introduce an event like the Community Connection.

The school pledges to continue the service to the less privileged strata of the society through diverse programmes in future.
