The day of the robes
- Graduation Day, 2015

As dusk fell, the faces beamed as the much awaited moment of appreciation drew nearer on June 6 at the Maria’s Public School premises. The occasion of Graduation Day for the AISSCE 2014-15 batch, began in a solemn manner with the lighting of the lamp. Mrs Nellie Ahmed Tanweer, the Founder and Managing Trustee in her address to the gathering fondly remembered the day when she started her little school 25 years back with only one student and how it expanded into a senior secondary school over the years with a present roll of about 3000 students. Mrs Ahmed said, “Today, I see my vision unfurling into reality as the seventh batch of successful AISSCE candidates stand on the threshold of a wider world - enriched, confident and bold enough to take on the forthcoming challenges in their stride.” To the young graduates she said, “I want you all to chant this ‘Don’t stop, do - till you excel’ mantra and make your dreams come true. Believe in yourself, your dreams and your desires. You must not lose focus on the priorities of life. And one day you’d definitely reach your destination.”

Speaking on the occasion, Mrs Alpana Khound Phukan, Principal, Maria’s Public School congratulated the students for having performed brilliantly in their board exam. She also delivered the annual report of the school on the year 2014-15. Dr Mafuza Rahman, former HoD of Geography, Cotton College State University and Chief Guest on the occasion advised the students to carefully choose their option as, “After the choice is made there’ll be no turning back,” she said. She also asked them to be ‘grounded’. While citing an example of an ex student of Maria’s who was an alumni of Cotton College she said that as she had that trait in her persona in spite of all the exposure she got, she blended more with her fellow students and so was more accepted and learnt more in the process. Further she urged them to be aware of their social responsibilities.

Following her address the stream toppers were awarded with cash prizes and certificates. Nimisha Savapandit, a student of Humanities and the overall topper among all the streams with 97 per cent was awarded with the Nellie Ahmed Tanweer Award of Rs. 50,000 (Rs. Fifty thousand) and a certificate by the Managing Trustee herself. The other stream toppers Neeraj Kakati, in Science and Rohan Saikia and Akansha Biyani in Commerce were awarded with cash prizes of Rs 5,000 (Rs. Five thousand) each and certificates. Thereafter it was the turn of the subject toppers in all the subjects to receive their accolades from Prof. Ranjit Choudhury, former HoD, English, Cotton College State University. These students scoring staggering marks in all the subjects in all the three streams stole the show with scores which would not fall below 95 and reaching the limit of 100. At this juncture, Prof Choudhury remarked, “I can’t say no to Maria’s whenever they invite me for any occasion.” To the students he said, “You’ll not lose your commitment. You are young Assam.” While speaking on the academics of Maria’s Prof Choudhury said, “This intellectual outreach can be a virus.” He further advised the young graduates that to achieve something one has to have a magnificent obsession.

Finally the moment came when all the achievers were handed over the certificates of merit, unbolting the door to a broader horizon. This jubilant moment was symbolized in the dance performance that followed.

Thereafter the stage was taken over by the stream toppers to say a few words of gratitude and advice to their parents, alma mater and the fellow students.

The other two attractions of the evening were the felicitation of the teachers with a hundred per cent attendance record and a PPT presentation on Maria’s Model United Nations (MMUN) by MMUN director Mausumi Mahanta. Mrs Madhavi Goswami, the headmistress of the Senior Secondary Section offered the vote of thanks. The evening came to an end with the school song and national anthem.

Another page of Maria’s glorious history was thus written and recorded on June 6, 2015.
