Guwahati, August 30: The Mofizuddin Ahmed Hazarika Literary Awards ceremony organised by Maria’s Public School was held at the District Library Auditorium on Saturday. The programmes started with the welcome address by Mrs Madhabi Goswami, HoD, Assamese of the school. Dr Amarjyoti Choudhury, Pro Vice Chancellor, Tezpur University and a renowned writer, poet, academician and intellectual attended the ceremony as the chief guest. Delivering his address Dr Choudhury reminisced late Mofizuddin Ahmed Hazarika’s contribution to Assamese and world literature as a whole. Calling him as the ‘symbol of national integration’ and a person with great secular thoughts, Dr Choudhury said that his birth anniversary should be celebrated at a greater level for a larger audience. The programme was graced by Mrs Gauri Basu, the Vice Principal of Loreto House, Kolkata as the Guest of Honour. She expressed her happiness at being able to attend the solemn occasion and said that Assam has an aura of serenity all over the land and that is what makes it more enchanting. Mrs Nellie Ahmed Tanweer, Founder and Managing Trustee of Maria’s Educational Trust and the granddaughter of late Mofizuddin Ahmed Hazarika expressed her happiness over the growing response to the literary fest and said that the initiative taken years back to build a strong connection with the roots has borne fruit as children now seem to excel literary exercises both in the vernacular medium as well as in English. This effort she said was the result of her mother Sofia Z Ahmed’s impetus to fathom the philosophy of the late poet and translate them into reality. Dr Mafuza Rahman, retired HoD of Geography in Cotton College State University and another granddaughter of the poet-philosopher reiterated the same thoughts in her speech and said that their mother Mrs Ahmed showed them a broad perspective to life bereft of caste, creed or religious boundary as advocated by the poet. Mr Anis-Uz-Zaman, the current president of Xodou Axom Kabi Sanmelan and the president of Mofizuddin Ahmed Hazarika Literary Awards Committee presided over the ceremony and said that the late poet was the initiator of Sufism in Assamese poetry.

Following the meeting and a short cultural show the prize distribution ceremony started with four special awards to Violina Das and Siddhant Agarwal, students of Class X, Maria’s Public School for their remarkable performance in the Student Climate and Conservation Congress held in West Virginia, US this year and to Sahil Dey, Class IV and Afsheen Zaman, UKG, two child chess prodigies of the school who have created ripples in the national and international chess arena. Immediately after this prizes for the literary fest were distributed to winners from various schools, both from English and Assamese medium schools in Guwahati. The competitions for this fest were held from August 17 to 20, 2015 in Assamese Creative Writing and recitation, English Creative Writing and Recitation, Debate and Quiz among students representing about 22 schools in the city. The Jugal Kishore Choudhury Running Trophy was awarded to the elocution team from Maria’s Public School. It may be mentioned that this trophy has been offered by Prof Ranjit Choudhury, retired Head of the Department, English, Cotton College in memory of his late uncle to acknowledge excellence in elocution. Mrs Alpana Khound Phukan, Principal, Maria’s Public School offered the vote of thanks.
