The prize distribution ceremony of the 16th edition of Mofizuddin Ahmed Hazarika Literary Awards was held today at the ITA, Machkhowa in a solemn manner. A book, ‘Kabyasindhu Mofizuddin’, a collection of analytical writing on the work of the Gyanmalini Kabi Mofizuddin Ahmed Hazarika, edited by Anish Uz Zaman, permanent president of the Mofizuddin Ahmed Hazarika Memorial Committee supported by Maria’s Public Educational Trust, was also released on the occasion. This year the function was graced by renowned litterateur and ex-President of Asom Sahitya Sabha Dr Nagen Saikia as the Chief Guest, Dr Amarjyoti Choudhury, ex Pro Vice Chancellor, Tezpur University as the Guest of Honour and Dr Anil Kumar Goswami, ex Principal, Cotton College among other stalwarts of literary as well as academic world in Assam. While delivering his address, Dr Saikia said that late Ahmed Hazarika’s poetry has elements of solidarity and harmony which if harnessed can pave the way for a peaceful and progressive society. He also applauded the Memorial Committee and Maria’s Educational Trust for taking the initiative of upholding the philosophy of the Gyanmalini Kabi. Dr Amarjyoti Choudhury in his speech highly praised the steps taken by Maria’s Public School and the Memorial Committee to commemorate the poet and his work. He said that there is a distinct rhythm in the poet’s verses which makes them more alluring. Mrs Nellie Ahmed Tanweer, Founder and Managing Trustee, Maria’s Public School and granddaughter of the poet said that Mofizuddin Ahmed Hazarika Literary competitions is the realization of a dream seen by her mother Sofia Z Ahmed. She also said that the school has been organizing competitions on creative writing and recitation both in Assamese and English, quiz and debate since 2001 among the school children in Guwahati to provide a platform for literary exercises in English as well as Assamese. Later, prizes were distributed among the prize winners of the competitions which were held in August, 2016. Mrs Alpana Khound Phukan, Principal, Maria’s Public School delivered the Vote of Thanks in the function.
