Maria's Public School hosted the Model United Nations from 19th-21st May 2017. With over 150 delegates from the premier schools of Guwahati, Springdale Jorhat and DPS Numaligarh the young students set about engaging in issues which concern the youth of today. Incidentally the theme of the Conference was the 'Youth of Today'. Narco-State Terrorism and Drug Abuse, Sedition and Communal politics, Hunger and Illiteracy that has impacted on the youth globally were deliberated upon. There was a Futuristic Committee 'US Elections 2020' where students emulated Replubican and Democratic Senators vying for the supreme post and debated everything from the Mexican Wall to the standoff between US and DPRK to the Syrian Crisis, not to mention oil and gas. The Historic Committee 'Congregation of the Balkan States' on the other hand delved into whether the First World War could have been arrested, through diplomacy and statesmanship. The Chief Guest for the opening ceremony was Mr Huzefa Kapadia, President of the Ivy League MUN and Harvard MUN Cafe, who impressed the august gathering with a documentary "The DNA Journey" that convinced one and all that we have more in common with the world than we think, and that an open world begins with an open mind. Mrs Tehseen Alam, from UNICEF Assam attended the closing function and she spoke about the demographic and social reality about India and Assam and inspired the youth to give voice to the multifarious problems that plague the society. The Secretary-General and President of MMUN 2017 were Anurag Baruah and Arijita Sinha Roy.
