World Disabled Day observed - 2017

The World Disabled Day, 2017 was observed at Maria’s Public School with a colourful programme, ‘We Can! We Will! Talents Unlimited’, with a special theme of integration where normal children participated with differently abled children. The programme started with a special prayer by Mrs Mercy Alex, a senior teacher which was followed by a speech by the Principal Mrs Alpana Khound Phukan. She also read out a special message from Mrs Nellie Ahmed, Founder and Managing Trustee of the school. The cultural programme started with a chorus sung by Ankit Chakravarty, Shahid Zaffor, Shristi Soni, Sagnik Das, Nikhil Bansal, Harshil Kasera, Ishita Saikia, Swapnil Sarma and Ishita Tumung. A group dance was performed by Vaiishnavi Choudhury, Abhilasha Deka, Umang Arup Deka, Yashvardhan Borgohain and Nishant Das. A graceful Satriya dance was performed by Jigyasa Kakati. Recitation of a William Blake poem by Umang Arup Deka was the next performance showcased by the children with special abilities. The keyboard played by Yashvardhan Borgohain made all tap their feet at the peppy numbers. He wrapped up his programme playing the National Anthem in his keyboard. Later the children were also taken for a field trip.

World Disability Day celebrated

The World Disability Day was observed at Maria’s Public School with a day-long programme on December 3. The celebrations began with a special assembly in the presence of the children enrolled under Maria’s Inclusive Education. This wing of Maria’s was initiated by the Founder and Managing Trustee Mrs Nellie Ahmed Tanweer 25 years back to impart education to children with cases of mild to moderate mental retardation, cerebral palsy, Down's syndrome, attention deficit hyperactive disorder and hearing impaired. Dr Shabina Ahmed, the recipient of the National Award for Child Welfare, 2015 and a renowned paediatrician was felicitated during the celebration. Dr Ahmed is the founder and developmental paediatrician of the public charitable trust, Assam Autism Foundation (AAF), based in Guwahati and she has been in the pursuit of making autism and related issues better understood and has devoted her career to uplift child and adolescent developmental quality and child rights and has been rendering valuable services to the community. The words spoken by Dr Ahmed on the occasion inspired not ony the special educators of this wing of Maria’s but has also motivated the entire Marian family. She said that disabilities should not be a hindrance for progress and suggested that the name of the day should be ‘International Day for People with Special Needs’.The Managing Trustee while greeting the children on the World Disability Day said, “We will continue to strive for a better future and society for people with disabilities through our values of caring, sharing, giving and lending a compassionate hand without discrimination.” The Principal Mrs Alpana Khound Phukan wished the children and said that the school will continue providing them with the best of facilities. Following her speech the children with special needs put up a scintillating cultural show.
