It brought together students of Maria’s Public School and a few nearby vernacular medium schools – Bonda Anchalik High School, Narengi High School, Raghunath Choudhary High School and Janata Hindi Vidyalaya for a collective drive that aimed at nurturing our natural environment and teach students the importance of solid waste management, rainwater harvesting and vermicomposting.
The workshop was graced by Mr Surjya Kumar Bordoloi Chairman, Rural Women Upliftment Association, Assam as the Chief Guest, the Founder and Managing Trustee of Maria’s Public School, Mrs Nellie Ahmed, Principal Mausumi Mahanta and Vice Principal Mr Anjan Gogoi.
The Founder and Managing Trustee carefully highlighted the importance of composting and rainwater harvesting in her speech. She encouraged the children to start a small compost pit at home and place a bucket outside when it rains to practice rainwater harvesting. Nellie Ma’am was presented with a plant as a token of love and appreciation by Priyana and Shravani, two students of Maria’s Public School.
The sessions included screening of videos on the topic and interactive activities where the students learned the basics of solid waste management including a practical session on waste segregation that gave the students a brief insight into waste management.
A plantation drive was conducted by the students of both the host and guest schools, leaving a lasting impression on the day’s proceedings. A brief Q&A session was also conducted, which encouraged students to reflect on what they had learned.
The workshop proved to be an exciting and hands-on experience for all involved. With its interactive approach, it was a resounding success, which served as a powerful reminder of the role young minds play in building a more sustainable future.
