The first ever online edition of Maria’s Model United Nations concluded on July 18, 2021 with the Secretary General of the session Alpesh Abhijit Choudhury declaring its closure. In spite of the unfavorable situation due to the pandemic, an encouraging number of delegates from various schools in the state took part in the two-day event.
In the inaugural session the Founder and Managing Trustee, Mrs. Nellie Ahmed stated, “What better way than to brainstorm on some pertinent global issues to keep ourselves animated and at a time like this.”
The Principal of the school, Mrs. Mausumi Mahanta, who is also the Director of MMUN, said that the spirit behind stimulating the committees of the United Nations has awakened and the students have got their much needed platform to voice their opinions and take a step forward for making a better tomorrow as global citizens.
The virtual edition had it all – from hardcore preparation to intense debate, brainstorming sessions to efficient judgement of the chairpersons. The student delegates were excellent in their deliberations with the alumni of MPS holding the reins carrying forward the legacy of excellent leadership.
MMUN ’21 had four committees – the United Nations Security Council (UNSC); the Historic US Senate – the very first of its kind; the All India Political Parties Meet (AIPPM); and the United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA) each with its own unique and engaging agenda. The committees offered delegates a platform to broaden their perspective on world politics, including real-life challenges arising from the current pandemic.
The theme for MMUN ’21 was Comprehending Nuances of Prejudices Across Geopolitics with a focus on the age-old practice of prejudices and their various repercussions on society over time in the form of violence or peaceful protests.
MMUN ’21 declared the Army Public School, Narengi, Guwahati as the best team, the Sarla Birla Gyan Jyoti and Maria’s Public School were adjudged as the first and second runners up respectively.
