Maria’s Public School observed World Environment Day 2026 with a series of meaningful activities aimed not only at creating environmental awareness among students but also at encouraging them to explore practical solutions and critically examine the feasibility of existing environmental policies through discussion and reflection.
The programme commenced with a special assembly, where Principal Mrs. Mausumi Mahanta led a soul-searching prayer that concluded with a pledge by students and staff to serve as responsible stewards of the environment.
The special guest for the occasion, Ms. Papori Kachari, Forester-I, Assam Forest Department, captivated the students with inspiring accounts of her conservation efforts. A dedicated environmentalist, Ms. Kachari played a pivotal role in transforming the Manas Tiger Reserve into a zero-poaching zone. She shared her experiences of leading five successful intelligence-based operations that resulted in the arrest of several poachers and the seizure of illegal wildlife products, including tiger bones, rhino horns, elephant tusks, 43 packets of deer meat, and other animal parts. Her unwavering commitment has dealt a significant blow to wildlife trafficking networks and earned her numerous awards and recognitions.
The day’s activities included Poster and Model Making, Badge Designing, Climate Pledge Writing, Nature Journaling and Observational Drawing, as well as Merchandise Designing featuring coasters, T-shirts, and pen stands. Students of Classes I to X enthusiastically participated in these creative exercises.
For Classes XI and XII, a Youth Climate Roundtable was organised and facilitated by Thanglenlal Doungel and Eenakshi Borthakur of Class XI. The discussion provided a platform for students to deliberate on pressing environmental issues and propose innovative solutions for a sustainable future.
The highlight of the celebration was the ‘Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle’ Exhibition presented by students of Classes II and III. The exhibition showcased attractive handmade bags creatively crafted from old, upcycled T-shirts, demonstrating how waste materials can be transformed into useful and eco-friendly products.
Through these engaging activities, Maria’s Public School reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing environmentally conscious citizens who are prepared to contribute meaningfully towards building a greener and more sustainable world.
